Turbocharged Ford Explorer billed as most fuel-efficient SUV

By Chris Woodyard

Ford says the government has certified that its Explorer crossover SUV with its small, turbocharged engine gets 20 miles a gallon in the city, 28 mpg on the highway. That should make it the most fuel-efficient seven-passenger SUV on the market.

The Explorer with the great mileage has a 2-liter engine with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged engine. Ford says the engine has four-cylinders but it has the power output of a V-6. The automaker boasts that its gas mileage numbers beat Honda Pilot and Jeep Grand Cherokee by 5 miles per gallon and Chevrolet Traverse by 4 mpg.

“Today’s SUV buyers place a high priority on miles per gallon, so Explorer has expanded its portfolio of fuel-efficient engines with an all-new EcoBoost offering,” said Amy Marentic, Ford group marketing manager. “SUV buyers deserve efficiency with their capability, so Explorer now offers best-in-class V6 and four-cylinder fuel efficiency.”

It also delivers better highway fuel economy than some midsize cars, such as the Subaru Impreza, Ford says. Explorer with EcoBoost will deliver 240 horsepower.
