Ford reveals new Fusion NASCAR racer
By Chris Woodyard
Ford says its next Fusion NASCAR is going to look more like the real thing.
The car will get a new silhouette that’s more in the shape of the real car. At present, most of the cars in NASCAR have basically the same shape on their shells and are differentiated only by stickers. While the NASCAR Fusion will be made to look more like a stock Fusion, that’s about as far as the similarity to the real stock version will go. Beneath the shell, the engine, chassis and the rest will be strictly NASCAR. Once upon a time, stock cars were just that: stock.
The 2013 Ford Fusion NASCAR Sprint Cup car is being unveiled today as part of the Charlotte Motor Speedway Media Tour.
“We wanted Fusion to be the car that helped return ‘stock car’ to NASCAR,” stated Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “I think fans, when they see the car, are just going to smile and cheer. It is going to re-engage them with the sport and make the sport better because there is just something natural about seeing race cars that look like cars in their driveways.”
Ford says this is third time that it has simultaneously launched production and NASCAR versions of a new model. The first was in 1968 with the Torino. The second time came in 2006 with the current version of the Fusion.
