It’s a record for Ford.

The auto company posted its best-ever third quarter results: $1.7 billion. It was far better than analysts had expected.

Ford says that a strong product line and an improving consumer image has helped the company’s sales surge. Consumer Reports Reliability Survey, released Wednesday, may help further bolster that image.

David Champion, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports, said that Ford has several individual models that have better quality than Toyota. The Fusion mid-size sedan outranked both the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry, two of the most reliable cars on the road.

Champion said that Ford’s improvements began five years ago, and have continued.
